Carmen is the icon of seduction, the emblem of the Dionysiac and can be compared only to Don Giovanni for the revolutionary sense of freedom that brings up to the stage. Carmen, accepting her own death, accepts her finiteness and makes it as her life's horizon. She has an a-moral and ancestral courage, a physical courage that comes from the awareness of being made of meat and instincts. The interpretation of Carmen Duo follows this line: the character is pure energy, symbol of existential determination.
The representation wants to investigate the profound dignity of the individual and her humanity in a vital and visceral direction.
Director's notes
What lead men to take a no return descent trip to hell or to completely lose their humanity? 'This is the question that we started with. The story of Carmen thanks to the relationship between the two protagonists, gave us the opportunity to investigate this delicate subject, in a contemporary vision of the work of Merimee/Bizet. An actor and a dancer, a man and a woman, Don Jose and Carmen, represent two opposite identities: strong and desperate don Jose, vital and sensual Carmen. A path that is rhythmic and emotional at the same time where the body is the unique vehicle of this crazy relationship. There are no words, and a few evocative objects on the scene that are the only fixed points of the story. These two souls are the ghosts of a humanity that does not recognize the meaning of life: he is unable to understand and accept her need of freedom and she is unable to live love without ending up in chains. Carmen’s death will be inevitable and there will always be will no forgiveness.
